Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbeen) is een polyfenol en fytoalexine geproduceerd door verschillende planten wanneer ze worden aangevallen door pathogenen zoals bacteriën of schimmels. Resveratrol is momenteel een onderwerp van talloze studies en menselijke studies in de effecten ervan. De effecten van resveratrol op de levensduur van veel modelorganismen blijven controversieel, met onzekere effecten op fruitvliegen, nematodewormen en kortstondige vissen. In muis- en rat-experimenten zijn anti-kanker, ontstekingsremmende, bloedsuikerverlagende en andere gunstige cardiovasculaire effecten van resveratrol gemeld. De meeste van deze resultaten moeten nog worden gerepliceerd bij mensen. In de enige positieve menselijke studie zijn extreem hoge doses (3-5 g) resveratrol in een eigen formulering nodig om de bloedsuikerspiegel aanzienlijk te verlagen. Ondanks de reguliere pers die de anti-verouderingseffecten van Resveratrol beweert, is er weinig aanwezige wetenschappelijke basis voor de toepassing van deze claims op zoogdieren (zie het leven-verlengingsgedeelte hieronder).
Resveratrol wordt gevonden in de huid van rode druiven en is een bestanddeel van rode wijn, maar blijkbaar niet in voldoende [nodig] hoeveelheden om de Franse paradox te verklaren. Resveratrol is ook geproduceerd door chemische synthese of door biotechnologische synthese (metabole gemanipuleerde micro -organismen) en wordt verkocht als een voedingssupplement dat voornamelijk afkomstig is van het Japanse knoop.

Introduction |
Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is a polyphenol and phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. Resveratrol is currently a topic of numerous animal and human studies into its effects. The effects of resveratrol on the lifespan of many model organisms remain controversial, with uncertain effects in fruit flies, nematode worms, and short-lived fish. In mouse and rat experiments, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-lowering and other beneficial cardiovascular effects of resveratrol have been reported. Most of these results have yet to be replicated in humans. In the only positive human trial, extremely high doses (3–5 g) of resveratrol in a proprietary formulation have been necessary to significantly lower blood sugar. Despite mainstream press alleging resveratrol's anti-aging effects, there is little present scientific basis for the application of these claims to mammals (see Life-Extension section below). Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a constituent of red wine, but apparently not in sufficient[citation needed] amounts to explain the French Paradox. Resveratrol has also been produced by chemical synthesis or by biotechnological synthesis (metabolic engineered microorganisms) and is sold as a nutritional supplement derived primarily from Japanese knotweed. |
